SUNDAY 24TH FEB

Metal Detectives Group & Leisure promotions dig

On Over

250 acres of rolled and seeded ground

In

Burford

Oxfordshire

MDG & LP are returning to the fields we visited for the MDG/LP Christmas dig on Saturday 15th December when the the weather was so bad it stopped most of us half way through the day, this time however we have booked spring like weather for our return to the lovely Cotswolds.

We will also have some new fields to search as well as all the ones we did or attempted to do on the 15th. Even though the weather was really bad on the 15th we still saw gold hammered, silver roman and hammered silver coming up. Now the weather will be better everything else will also be much better...

Our search area lies just outside the very historic Medieval Market town of Burford.

The area is steeped in amazing history from Bronze Age upward, with tales of Saxon battles close by, Roman villas, and Iron Age settlements all within close proximity to the search fields.

The Metal Detectives Group members have searched this site before a few years back and with great success, with Gold hammered coming up, Anglo Saxon artefacts, Iron Age Units, Roman coins and brooches, and much more. The Christmas dig also saw several great finds made despite the the seriously seriously bad bad weather on the day.

So Lucky for you lot we can point you all in the right direction of the hot spots we already know about, but with all that space there are bound to me more amazing finds to be made from this permission.

Malmesbury and other chroniclers record a battle between the West Saxons and Mercians at Burford in AD 752. In the end Æthelhum, the Mercian standard-bearer who carried the flag with a golden dragon on it, was killed by the lance of his Saxon rival.The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records "A.D 752. This year Cuthred, king of the West Saxons, in the 12th year of his reign, fought at Burford, against Æthelbald king of the Mercians, and put him to flight."The historian William Camden (1551–1623) wrote

The origin of the golden dragon standard is attributed to that of Uther Pendragon, the father of King Arthur of whom Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote:

In the late 16th or early 17th century the people of Burford still celebrated the anniversary of the battle. Camden wrote: "There has been a custom in the town of making a great dragon yearly, and carrying it up and down the streets in great jollity on St John's Eve".The field traditionally claimed to be that of the battle is still called Battle Edge.

According to Reverend Francis Knollis' description of the discovery, "On 21 November 1814 a large freestone sarcophagus was discovered near Battle Edge 3 feet (0.91 m) below ground, weighing 16 long hundredweight (1,800 lb; 810 kg) with the feet pointing almost due south. The interior is 6 feet (1.8 m) long and 2 feet 2 inches (0.66 m) wide. It was found to contain the remains of a human body, with portions of a leather cuirass studded with metal nails. The skeleton was found in near perfect state due to the exclusion of air from the sarcophagus." The coffin is now preserved in Burford churchyard, near the west gate.

We will have a burger van in attendance to provide you with hot and cold food and drinks throughout the day.

Leisure Promotions will be there with a van and stock to make sure you can pick up any last min xmas gifts or anything else you may feel you really really need.

There is great potential out in these fields and who knows some lucky bugger might find a hoard of staters….
